New food pantry opens in Springfield

A new low-income food pantry will be open Saturday in Springfield’s Thurston neighborhood.

Catholic Community Services of Lane County, FOOD for Lane County and volunteers came together to open the food pantry at Waypoint Church, 332 58th St. in Springfield. The pantry, across from Thurston High School, will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the fourth Saturday of each month.

“It’s a place where people come and get free groceries,” said Catholic Community Services Executive Director Tom Mulhern.

Food pantry volunteers determine if someone is eligible by comparing their income to the poverty level and how many people live in their home.
