Growing & Learning

GrassRoots Garden is a vibrant community hub where people of all ages and backgrounds dig in, learn and grow. Each year, 2,500 people — students, adults and those with special needs, corporate volunteers and faith-based groups — participate in gardening, cooking and community-building, gaining valuable experience, service learning hours, and the opportunity to socialize and contribute.

Through workshops and other activities, staff, community members and OSU Extension Service’s Lane County Master Gardeners oversee our demonstration gardens and teach participants how to plant and grow fresh herbs, create pollinator-friendly gardens, and care for fruit orchards and compost. All workshops are free to the public, and we ask the participants register ahead of time. When these programs are offered, information can be found in our news and events.

In our garden kitchen, staff and community members create nutritious plant-based lunches featuring garden produce, while OSU Extension Master Food Preservers teach food preservation workshops. When programs are offered, information can be found in our news and events section.

In addition to growing, selling and distributing produce, we also host plant sales for those who want vibrant starts to grow their own fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers. The starts sold at the annual plant sales are grown at the Food for Lane County Youth Farm. While our Gardens programs are not certified organic, we grow our plant starts using donated non-GMO seeds and organically certified amendments and potting soils. We accept SNAP/EBT for all edible plant starts and match up to half the cost! Learn more about our plant sales.
